Kermit's Lament: It's Not Easy Being Green
Start Date: 11/20/2013Start Time: 4:10 PM
End Date: 11/20/2013
Event Description:
Engineers working in companies that promote green technology and promise social benefits are often placed in difficult situations of having to choose between the sustainability of the company and the protection of the environment. What is the right thing to do if one commits to working toward global sustainability and green engineering, and is then confronted with options that would reduce the profitability of the company? This presentation challenges the basic precepts of green engineering and asks engineers to reconsider why they are committed to working toward sustainability.

Speaker: P. Aarne Vesilind. Following his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University, Vesilind received his Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of North Carolina in 1968. He spent a post-doctoral year with the Norwegian Institute for Water Research in Oslo and a year as a research engineer with Bird Machine Company. He joined the faculty at Duke University in 1970 where he served as chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In 1999 he was appointed to the R. L. Rooke Chair of the Historical and Societal Context of Engineering at Bucknell University. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 2006.
